My brief comment was not so much a reflection of my confidance in the answer as it was an assurance that I didn't miss this dilemma, as I have the previous two.
This is a very serious dilemma. The straw that finalized my vote was McCartney's general unlikeable and desperate omnipresence these last years.
John Lennon, for the exact reasons JB said... that's exactly what I was thinking. I generally like Paul's arrangement abilities better, but Lennon was the essence of cool and creativity. I bet he was the Sergeant of Shananigans in his day.
McCartney was/is the more talented musician, mastering every instrument known to man. McCartney's body of work is far more impressive, despite his recent (last 30 years) failures. Even as a Beatle, you just can't beat (ha!) Yesterday, Hey Jude, Let it Be, most of Abbey Road, Junk, and all of his other masterpieces. Even In My Life, Lennon's favorite Lennon-McCartney son was primarily written by McCartney. Don't believe it? It's in the records. McCartney came up with the tune and some of the lyrics even though Lennon was the lead singer and took full credit for authorship. To McCartney's credit, Paul never tried to take credit for it. Even Lennon would have chosen McCartney. Okay, maybe not, but deep down he would have.
