How about appetizers AND dessert and no entree? I tend to like munching on appetizers better than eating a big entree.
But if i have to choose between A and D.... I'd have to say Appetizers. Desserts are rarely ever enjoyed the way they should be due to people stuffing themselves with a meal and then eating the dessert and inevitably regretting it.
However, I do not feel strongly about this decision... so consider yourself forewarned that I may change my mind.
I just thought I'd take the plunge and be the first to respond to this dilemma.
Appetizers, because it is scientific fact that people who order appetizers will eat less then someone who just orders the main course. This is because after you've had some of the appetizer your brain/Stomach get a head start in relaying the "I'm full message" to your body.
Appetizers are almost always false advertizing, and I hate ordering them because all they seem to do is pad the bill.
Dessert, on the other hand, is magic. Almost everyone has experienced being stuffed to the gills and still somehow packing in an extra serving of something sweet, even if there are often only 4 on the menu to choose from.
People vote with their mouths, and mouths like dessert.
Exactly. A reward for a meal well-eaten. Either you watch what you order for your main course to allow yourself the space for the extra calories that a dessert would pound on- aka eating well- OR you eat what you like, enjoy your meal, savoring every bite of it and still having room for dessert- aka meal well-eaten.
The only reason people SHOULDN'T order dessert, should be because they are full. "Eating less" doesn't always mean that you're eating well. Plus, i would rather intake 20g of sugar than 20g of pure fat from Nachos grande or fried mozzarella sticks.
The list of appetizers is longer because they know you're going to order an entree anyway. But if you order an entree, there's no guarantee you'll order dessert...Poor desserts, they are underappreciated, like migrant workers. Desserts.
Nati what a dream world you live in...20g of sugar in a dessert. It's more like 200g of sugar. Also, what dessert exists that has only sugar and no fat? And it's a lose lose because to much sugar is turned into fat by the body. I agree with Carla. I'm going for the Bruschetta every time over the fat ass cheese cake. At least you're hungry when you eat an appetizer. Gross!
How about breakfast? That would make this decision easier. Hmmm ... two good choices. One begins, one ends (typically). Tough, but I'll go with dessert on this one.
Appetizers, for many reasons. 1) I enjoy the varitey. 2) I often order one or two instead of an entree, because they are more appropriately sized for a meal and I can mix and match. 3) There have been very few desserts at restaurants that I have felt like I couldn't reproduce at home for a fraction of the cost. 4) When cooking at home, there is nothing like drinking a glass of wine and nibbling on cheese as I make dinner.
Julia - Interesting strategy expanding the dilemma to include at home cooking! I like it! I think it tipped me toward appetizers. You're absolutely right when you identify the surprisingly satisfactory action of munching while cooking.

but most people don't listen to the "I'm full" message from the brain.

Dessert. It's like a reward.
A reward for what? A meal well eaten?
Dessert.

but spinach and artichoke dip is an appetizer:)
plus there are always way more options at restaurants for appetizers than desserts

In restaurants, I rarely order either. Appetzers ruin the entree and the dessert selection is often poor and too fancy.
At home I enjoy a dessert every night. Either fruit or ice cream. Dessert.

Appetizer!
The answer: Appetizers. As far as I'm concerned, this is the toughest one yet. Desserts can be painful, while appetizers are almost always satisfying.
Decider, you lie to yourself.
